Start with a nozzle that has a wider fan pattern, and work your way up to the strength you need. The color of the nozzle will tell you its fan pattern: White is gentlest, with a 40 degree fan. green is 25, and yellow is 15 degrees. A red nozzle, at zero degrees, should not be used in everyday situations, as it could easily cause damage. Start spraying several feet away from the surface and move closer gradually to avoid surface damage.
Protect exterior fixtures
Be sure to cover your exterior fixtures like outdoor lighting, and cover plants and shrubs to protect them from the high-pressure spray. Use extra caution around windows, vents, and eaves.
Use caution with ladders
The high-pressure spray from a power washer can be strong enough to push your ladder over backwards – if you have to power wash on a ladder, use extreme caution.
Keep your pets clear
Animals may be curious about the noise and spray – be sure to secure your pets inside, or away from the work area, to avoid injury from the dangerous high-pressure spray.
Don’t spray for extended periods
Some soils, like oil spots, can be difficult to remove, even for a power washer. Don’t spray at high pressure for extended periods of time, or you may cause damage to the surface.
